Finding a true, loyal, one-in-a-million friend has been very crucial during my healing process. More important than having a person help me with household chores and running errands has been the consistency of an individual who could provide me the emotional support. The stability of a sound, enduring friendship has been helpful during this "shakey" time.
I had my heart broken several times after my 2000 and 2004 surgeries. I learned from my past that frequently people's intentions are good, but something gets "lots" in the delivery.
That is when I decided to get a pet. In May 2009 my oldest son bought me a chihuahua. Since day one my Rocky and I have bonded in such a way that is almost celestial. There have been mornings when I have been unable to get out of bed, but there's my little guy snuggled next to me. There are days when I cannot eat because of the problems in my intestines, but there's little Rocky wiping away my tears with his tongue. There are nights when it is difficult for me to sleep, but I know I can rely on Rocky to watch late-night movies with me.
Three years ago Rocky was rescued and given to me, but now he has become my rescue dog. I know he is a special blessing from God. That is why I know why all dogs go to heaven.
"All Dogs Go to Heaven"
by
Sandra Fernandez-Henderson
"My faithful friend, Rocky
of doe-like eyes and golden hair. You're the one who is always there,
never leaving my side.
They say all dogs go to Heaven.
I know now that is true.
You have such a pure heart
like fresh morning dew
on a rose.
More regal than a prince.
More courageous than a knight.
Your loyalty is reassuring
as you guard me while I sleep so I might
rest until dawn.
When you lick away my tears,
you add sunshine to rainy days.
You are the inspiring rainbow
that shows me ways
of enduring friendship.
Although you cannot speak in words,
through your actions you reveal,
a unique bond of love and joy
that is able to heal."

I would strongly encourage people to get a pet to help ease the pain and loneliness of dealing with cancer.
I agree 100%, Sistah! My hubby laughs at me because I say Peanut has little "wings" on his back (he has lighter colored fur there that is shaped like them) and I really do believe he is a gift from God, come down from heaven to show me unconditional love. What a great blessing and inspiration they are. Love and hugs to you and Rocky!
